The FARE Vision Awards take their name from FARE’s vision statement, which is to make the world safe for people with food allergies. These awards recognize individuals and entities who work to make that vision a reality, and who support FARE in its mission to improve the quality of life and the health of individuals with food allergies, and to provide them hope through the promise of new treatments.
Our 2015 award winners have gone above and beyond in their efforts to support the food allergy community, and they are truly leaders in making a difference for everyone who is living with food allergies. The second FARE Vision Awards were presented at the FARE National Food Allergy Conference in Long Beach, Calif. on May 16, 2015. The 2015 recipients are:
Vision Award for Outstanding Corporate Citizen
Presented to a corporation that has made a positive impact in the lives of people with food allergies and supported the food allergy community through a partnership with FARE.
Presented to Sanofi
FARE is proud to partner with Sanofi, a sponsor of FARE’s Food Allergy Conferences and Teen Summit, and an elite sponsor of the FARE Walk for Food Allergy for the last three years. Sanofi is not just a generous supporter of FARE’s educational conferences and fundraising events through its partnerships — employees of Sanofi have dedicated countless volunteer hours to support FARE’s mission programs.
Last year, the Sanofi Foundation of North America donated more than 90,000 epinephrine auto-injectors to the medical aid organization Direct Relief for distribution to nonprofit health centers, clinics and camps across the U.S. Additionally, Sanofi has also worked to increase awareness about anaphylaxis preparedness by producing innovative educational materials such as the Severe Allergy & Anaphylaxis Playbook, which was created in partnership with retired football great Jerome Bettis. As the makers of the Auvi-Q, Sanofi has played a vital role in the lives of so many Americans who are at risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Vision Award for Outstanding Community Citizen
Presented to an individual volunteer who has gone above and beyond to support FARE and its mission, dedicating herself to educating others and advocating for the cause.
Presented to Becky Basalone
Becky started a local support group, the Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee, shortly after her son was diagnosed to multiple food allergies in 2012. This group, known as FACET, has been a wonderful source of support for families managing food allergies. Additionally, Becky has worked to raise awareness and support FARE’s mission as the co-chair of the Walk for Food Allergy in Knoxville.
One of Becky’s most notable accomplishments though, has to do with a simple Halloween pumpkin, painted teal. In 2013, Becky encouraged local community members to paint their pumpkins teal to indicate that they had non-food treats available for trick-or-treaters. She called them as “Food Allergy Awareness Pumpkins” and encouraged others to participate so that children with food allergies and other dietary restrictions could safely participate in the fun of trick-or-treating. Last year, FARE launched the Teal Pumpkin Project on a national level with Becky’s blessing, and the rest is history. FARE’s social media posts about the Teal Pumpkin Project reached nearly 7 million people, and the campaign was mentioned in more than 800 media outlets. Families in every state participated, and it is our hope that this initiative will grow in years to come. For providing the inspiration for this incredible movement and for her dedication to food allergy education, advocacy and awareness, we are pleased to give her the Vision Award for Outstanding Community Citizen.
Vision Award for Outstanding Fundraising Achievement
Presented to an individual or a group of individuals who have gone above and beyond to raise critical funds to support FARE and its mission.
Presented to Stephanie Hirschberg and Bonnie Weinbach
Stephanie Hirschberg and Bonnie Weinbach, two dedicated mothers of children with food allergies, have made the FARE Walk for Food Allergy in Westchester a tremendous success. Thanks to their commitment and hard work, the Walk in Westchester has raised nearly $1.2 million dollars since 2010. This event has brought thousands of walkers together for a common cause, and was the number one FARE Walk for Food Allergy event in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
The FARE Walk for Food Allergy unites all of our supporters in support of our mission, and we could not have a successful walk program without dedicated and energetic volunteers like Stephanie Hirschberg and Bonnie Weinbach.
Teen Achievement Award
Presented to an outstanding youth volunteer whose dedicated service advances awareness of our cause.
Presented to Jake Rose
Last year at the tender age of 12, Jake Rose personally raised more than $14,000 for the FARE Walk for Food Allergy. Jake was not only the top fundraiser in the West region, but the entire country! Jake’s father tells us that this success is owed to Jake’s hard work and persistence. We salute you, Jake!
Presented to an individual or individuals who have greatly advanced the vision of a safer world for individuals with food allergies through significant public action.
Presented to Dave and Denise Bunning
Dave and Denise Bunning more than fit this description. In the years since their two sons were diagnosed with food allergies, this couple has been on an extraordinary journey made all the more remarkable by the exceptional actions they have taken to find a cure for food allergies while providing support and resources to all those affected.
They both have served in a variety of volunteer leadership roles at FARE and its predecessor organizations and have been instrumental in raising the visibility of food allergy through their generous investment in research and their support of events that have encouraged thousands of people to get involved with FARE.
While based in the Chicago area, the reach of their efforts on behalf of the food allergy cause is felt nationwide. We are truly inspired by the tremendous contributions that Dave and Denise Bunning have made over the years.
Congratulations and thank you to all of our 2015 Vision Award winners!
