How the Teal Pumpkin Project™ Saved a Boy’s Birthday

At its heart, the Teal Pumpkin Project™ is about making sure each and every child is able to fully take part in Halloween. It’s about making positive memories, supporting your neighbors, and bringing smiles to each trick-or-treater who visits your door.

For one family, FARE’s national launch of the Teal Pumpkin Project™ came at just the right moment. Tiffany shares with us how this national movement has made her son’s birthday and Halloween extra special occasions to celebrate.

I first heard about the Teal Pumpkin Project™ from FACET and FARE in 2014, about a month before my son’s birthday, which happens to fall on Halloween.

Ashael has food allergies, and was turning 3 years old on October 31. This made the already complicated “How do we make his birthday special for him while being shared with a holiday?” question additionally complicated with the fact that he would not be able to experience trick-or-treating in the same way as other kids.

This age is about when kids start to figure out how these types of things work. I didn’t even want to begin to imagine what it would be like when everyone was having a party at school on his birthday that he would most likely be left out of.

The Teal Pumpkin Project™ was a Godsend for our family.

The Teal Pumpkin Project™ made it easy for us to focus on something other than candy to make Halloween (and my son’s birthday) extra special.

We had a few people in our neighborhood, and even a few outside of our regular trick-or-treating area reach out and let us know they were participating in the project. We made sure to remember who those people were and visited their homes on Halloween night. One family even made play dough out of beeswax (avoiding wheat) and shaped it into cute little animal toys for my son to play with.

It was such a blessing to have my son receive some treats while trick-or-treating on Halloween night that he could keep!

We know the Teal Pumpkin Project™ has the ability to help raise awareness not only on Halloween, but to get others thinking about the benefits that come from including ALL children with non-food treats, and that we don’t have to center all celebrations around food to still have fun!
