Webinar Recording and Recap: Educating a Whole Community About Food Allergies: One District’s Journey

The August 17, 2016, webinar Educating a Whole Community About Food Allergies: One District’s Journey featured three Arlington Heights, IL, administrators—Lori Bein, Ph.D., Ginny Hiltz, M.S.Ed., and Eric Larson, M.S.Ed.—sharing how their district is accommodating students with food allergies.

While the district had some food allergy policies and procedures in place, it had to rethink these when a student with a peanut allergy suffered anaphylaxis in school. Following the incident, the district started looking at how it could manage food allergies better and close the gap in awareness and understanding throughout the entire school community.

During the course of the webinar, Dr. Bein and her colleagues shared the changes the individual schools and districts implemented (for example, only fruit and vegetables for snacks in one school), the reaction from the school and public, and tips for schools and parents.
